Can contraceptives be your underlying cause? Taking contraceptives increases the chance of Candida overgrowth. Homeopathy can be used to detox from contraceptives.

There are a  few contraceptives available, and those containing hormones are the ones I am referring to as a possible cause for candida overgrowth:

  • combined pill.
  • Contraceptive implant.
  • Contraceptive injection.
  • Contraceptive patch.
  • IUD (intrauterine device or coil)

The pill is widely used as birth control or to regulate premenstrual symptoms, but it does have many side effects. One of them is it increases your chance of getting Candida overgrowth.

Why can contraceptives lead to candida?

Birth control pills block your hormones. The hormones do protect the gut wall and the blood-brain barrier. When the hormones are blocked, the tissues are more vulnerable, increasing the susceptibility for the tissues to become damaged. This is because the epithelial cells of the mucous membranes of the gut usually are in harmony with candida. The pill does destroy the balance and allows Candida to thrive. Then alarmins are released from the gut lining, and inflammation occurs.
Overgrowth occurs when Candida attaches itself to estrogen. This prevents the body from using the estrogen and eventually drives the estrogen levels down. During this time, the progesterone levels may increase. This is the perfect condition for Candida to flourish, which can lead to a yeast infection.

A story:
I had a client called Mira, who had been on the pill for five years when her candida symptoms started. She had used over the counter medications on many occasions, which was enough to relieve her symptoms for 2-3years. Mira had different conventional treatments for over a year. Her problem kept coming back once she stopped taking the medications. When her symptoms kept coming back, the client went to a gynaecologist and was given Fluconazole(allopathic antifungal tablets) for a month. Her husband had the same treatment at the same time. Then she read more about Candida and started a diet as well.
She came to me as a last resort as she did not know what else to do. Her vaginal symptoms made her feel sore and affected her family life as she did not have much sexual drive anymore. Many women with vaginal Candida can relate to this. If you are inflamed, burning and dry, the last thing you want is intercourse. Many factors may have contributed to her problems. She was taking birth control pills. Mira had many antibiotics for different infections, starting from when she was a child and then for skin acne as an adult. Mira has a sweet tooth and had a fair share of sugar in her life. She has dental amalgams as well.
When she came to see me, Mira was sugar-free but still having a lot of fruit (up to 10 a day). Her treatment went over four appointments. She had some balancing remedies and other remedies tailored to her symptoms. Mira kept a strict Candida diet for two months, then relaxed and added some fruit and other carbs. It has been a year now since her treatment finished, and she remains symptom-free. Their relationship with her husband is good again. Mira says that “homeopathy has given her life back”.

What can increase the risk?
These habits may increase the risk of getting overgrowth:
⦁ Lack of sleep. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep.
⦁ Eating excessive amounts of sugar. Information about the Candida diet, you can find here.
⦁ Not changing tampons or pads often enough.
⦁ Wearing tight, synthetic, or wet garments.
⦁ Using irritating bath products, laundry detergent, lubes, or spermicides.
⦁ Using a contraceptive sponge.

What can be done?

I use homeopathic remedies to treat Candida.  I always advise on a healthy diet. The prescription will depend on the case.

  • Firstly I can use homeopathy to detox from contraceptives or other possible culprits for the disbalance. Homeopathic detox is a safe, gentle, inexpensive and effective method of detox.
  • Other possibilities are remedies to balance the Gut microbiome.
  • Another homeopathic prescription can be a remedy to balance your hormone levels. I often use Pulsatilla, Sepia, Foliculinum, depending on the picture.
  • Remedies to relieve the most bothering symptoms may be given to take as needed.
