Contraceptives and candida overgrowth

Can contraceptives be your underlying cause? Taking contraceptives increases the chance of Candida overgrowth. Homeopathy can be used to detox from contraceptives and balance your hormones.

The pill is widely used as birth control or to regulate premenstrual symptoms, but it does have many side effects. One of them is it increases your chance of getting Candida overgrowth. More about this you can read here after you read this article.

Why taking contraceptives can lead to candida?

Birth control pills block your hormones. The hormones do protect the gut wall and the blood-brain barrier. When the hormones are blocked, the tissues are more vulnerable and this increases the susceptibility for the tissues to become damaged. This is because the epithelial cells of the mucous membranes of the gut are normally in harmony with candida. More about this read here. The pill does destroy the balance and gives an opportunity for Candida to thrive. Then alarmins are released from the gut lining and inflammation occurs.

Overgrowth occurs when Candida attaches itself to estrogen. This prevents the body from using the estrogen and eventually drives the estrogen levels down. During this time the progesterone levels may increase. This is the perfect condition for Candida to flourish, which can lead to a yeast infection.

A story:

I had a patient called Mira, who had been on the pill for 5 years when her vagina symptoms started. She had used over the counter medications on many occasions and this was enough to relive her symptoms for some time. When her symptoms kept coming back she went to a gynaecologist and was given Fluconazole for a month and her husband was treated at the same time. Mira had different conventional treatments for over a year. Then she read more about Candida and started a diet as well.

She came to me as a last resort as she did not know what else to do. Her vaginal symptoms were making her feel sore and affecting her family life as she did not have much sexual drive anymore. Many women with vaginal Candida can relate to this. If you are inflamed, burning and dry the last thing you want is intercourse. There were other factors that may have contributed to her problems. She had many antibiotics for different infections starting from when Mira was a child and then for skin acne as an adult. Mira had a sweet tooth and had a fair share of sugar in her life.

When she came to see me she was sugar-free, but still having a lot of fruit (up to 10 a day). Her treatment went over 4 -5 months. She had contraceptives and antibiotic detox and homeopathic remedies tailored to her symptoms. Mira kept a strict diet for 2 months and then was able to relax it and add some fruit and other carbs to it. It has been a year now since her treatment finished and she remains symptom-free. The relationship with her husband is better than ever. Mira says that homeopathy has given her life back.

What can increase the risk?

These habits may increase the risk of getting overgrowth:

  • Lack of sleep. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep.
  • Eating excessive amounts of sugar. Information about the Candida diet find here.
  • Not changing tampons or pads often enough.
  • Wearing tight, synthetic, or wet garments.
  • Using irritating bath products, laundry detergent, lubes, or spermicides.
  • Using a contraceptive sponge.

What can be done?

Firstly we can use homeopathy to detox from the contraceptives. The course is usually done for a period of 8 weeks. Homeopathic detox is a safe, gentle, inexpensive and effective method of detox. This is done in cases where the candida overgrowth is linked with the use of contraceptives.

Another homeopathic prescription can be a remedy tailored to your symptoms that will balance your hormone levels. Pulsatilla, Sepia or Lachesis are remedies that weoften used for this purpose.

  1. I’m amazed, I must say. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s equally educative and engaging, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. The issue is something too few people are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy that I stumbled across this during my hunt for something relating to this.
